This lesson is an individual assignment on the first day unless the teacher has so many students that they opt to have multiple students play a single character and a group activity on the second day. The teacher has some leeway as to whether they want to provide certain primary and secondary sources or whether they want to treat it as more of a research assignment, where students can search for their own information. Students tend to learn facts about different presidents but sometimes they have trouble relating presidents to one another and making connections over time. It gives the students an opportunity to become a certain president — to look at presidents in a slightly different manner and to give them the experience of thinking as they did and walking around in their heads for a little while. Teaching research methodology to our new PhD fellows is my favourite class. Doing so in small groups, as is often the case in our PhD programmes and professional training, allows me to engage in creative and innovative educational formats. Every time I teach, I try a new set-up or tweak things a little. But of course, some formats have proven their value over time, so they become permanent fixtures every year. In an interactive classroom setting, we invite our PhDs to pitch their research idea to a few staff members in minute 1-on-1 meetings.
For staff members, the game is different. They have no choice — they simply talk to whomever sits opposite of them — but students can form strategies to ensure they meet their ideal set of professors. Experience tells us that both staff and students enjoy the exercise. For the students, the short meetings offer quick feedback at an early stage of their PhD, in a friendly constructive way. They are explicitly introduced to the research fields of the institute.
It challenges my ideas and with the limited time we are forced to be concise in our talks to convey our ideas.

Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process which has the purpose of encouraging eligible singles to meet large numbers of new potential partners in a very short period of time. SpeedDating , as a single word, is a registered trademark of Aish HaTorah. Speed dating , as two separate words, is often used as a generic term for similar events. The earliest documented example of speed dating was by Aryeh Alan and Rena Hirsch of Los Angeles in early who developed speed dating as a solution to the problem of typical single events where “only attractive women and outgoing men have success at the end of the evening”.
Usually advance registration is required for speed dating events. Men and women are rotated to meet each other over a series of short “dates” usually lasting from three to eight minutes depending on the organization running the event. At the end of each interval, the organizer rings a bell, clinks a glass, or blows a whistle to signal the participants to move on to the next date. At the end of the event participants submit to the organizers a list of who they would like to provide their contact information to.
Let me help you along. I have used this “Speed Dating” process to identify and address the complex relationships among competing initiatives referred to as interdependencies with functional integration teams for acquisitions, especially in more complicated cases. Example Consider the IT teams working on the integration of a purchased business that was carved out from another company.
Approximately 4 weeks after the start of integration, the teams have put together plans to implement their respective projects.
Developing meaningful community-based participatory relationships between researchers and the community can be challenging. The overall success of a community-based participatory relationship should be predicated on commitment and respect from empowered stakeholders. Prior to developing the technique discussed in this article, we hypothesized that the process of fostering relationships between researchers and the community was much like a social relationship: It has to develop organically and cannot be forced.
To address this challenge, we developed a community-based participatory research-speed dating technique to foster relationships based on common interests, which we call CBPR-SD. As part of a federally funded community-based research project, the speed dating technique was implemented for 10 researchers and 11 community leaders with a goal of developing scholarly collaborative groups who will submit applications for community-based research grants.
Our preliminary findings suggest that CBPR-SD is a successful tool for promoting productive scholarly relationships between researchers and community leaders. The speed-dating format is designed to help students spot comparisons and contrasts between different ideas, answers or categories of information. By enabling students to consider or research one area in depth, and then exchange their knowledge against the clock with classmates, it is an efficient means of sharing ideas and knowledge. It works particularly well for topics where there are lots of key personalities to learn about: for example, in History this could involve a comparison of Roman Emperors, or the attitude of different types of people towards Hitler in Nazi Germany in.
Each student has a short amount of time to formulate their response to the question, and then students are paired up to exchange their ideas. Each student then adjusts their original answer to accommodate any fresh ideas from the discussion, then moves to a fresh partner. This process can be repeated over several rounds, and then a fresh question can be posed once all perspectives on the first one appear to have been absorbed.
